Overview
Torys has advised Japanese companies and financial institutions doing business in North America and elsewhere for several decades. We have been engaged in several “firsts” for Japanese businesses in North America, including the first investment by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation in a Canadian dollar loan.
Our work for Japanese businesses covers a broad range of legal practice areas and industries in Canada, the United States, South America and Asia. Industries include mining, energy, oil and gas, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, consumer products, manufacturing, distribution, travel, transportation, trading and finance. Our lawyers have a deep understanding of the unique requirements and decision-making processes of Japanese business organizations, which allows us to bridge cross-cultural barriers in business, and facilitate effective communication, deal-making and dispute resolution.
We maintain a regular presence in Japan to further facilitate effective communication with our clients, and have strong relationships with financial advisers and professional services firms in major Japanese cities. Torys proactively seeks to connect our Japanese clients and our North American clients with mutually beneficial opportunities. Our Japan group also advises North American clients engaged in activity with Japanese companies, or in Japan, with support from our network of domestic Japanese professional advisors.
