
Alec maintains a broad litigation and dispute resolution practice, with an emphasis on complex commercial disputes, class action defence, securities litigation, and insolvency. He is fluent in French and routinely acts for clients in both Ontario and Québec.
Alec regularly represents financial institutions, manufacturers, suppliers and software developers in complex commercial disputes and class actions across a variety of industries, including banking, securities, consumer goods, and product liability.
Alec has considerable experience in securities-related litigation and investigations, where he acts for financial institutions, public issuers, and investment dealers in shareholder disputes and regulatory investigations. He also advises financial institutions and investment dealers on regulatory questions, compliance issues, and class actions.
In addition to his commercial practice, Alec maintains an active insolvency litigation practice, where he acts for debtors and creditors in contested restructuring proceedings under the Companies Creditors’ Arrangement Act, receiverships, and distressed asset sales. He has particular experience in restructurings involving concurrent class action proceedings.
Alec has appeared as counsel at all levels of court in Ontario, Quebec, and in the Federal Court, as well as various courts and administrative tribunals across Canada.
Prior to joining Torys, Alec served as a law clerk for the judges of the Court of Appeal for Ontario and practiced with a leading class actions firm in Toronto.
While at law school, Alec acted as the Director of Research for the Legal Information Clinic at McGill and served as a student clerk for the Québec Court of Appeal. From 2016-2018, he served on the executive committee of the McGill Business Law Association.
Alec is a member of the Ontario Bar Association, The Advocates’ Society, and the Association of French Speaking Jurists of Ontario (AJEFO).
