Guillaume Lavoie on Torys Montréal M&A deal activity

Despite a general softening in the M&A market in 2022, Montréal partner Guillaume Lavoie told Droit-Inc that his practice saw deal activity remain busy last year compared to previous years.

Torys was ranked number one by Refinitiv’s Canada M&A league table by deal value for the 2022 financial year after being credited on 63 deals with Canadian involvement totaling more than $39 billion in overall deal value.

Guillaume credited some of Torys’ success to its strong presence in New York which lends to its successful cross-border transactions. The firm leans on its multidisciplinary team with lawyers in the U.S. who have local practice.

“Even in our other offices, we have lawyers with the double Bar,” he added.

Torys has also received dealmaking recognition internationally. The firm has successfully engaged in a number of transactions with organizations in Japan that have assets in Québec, which has led to its first listing in Mergermarket's Japan league table by deal value.
