Historic First Nations investment in Darlington New Nuclear Project

On June 23, 2026, it was announced that the Williams Treaties First Nations (collectively, the “WTFN”) will invest C$700 million in the DNNP, the largest collective First Nations investment in nuclear generation in Canada’s history.

The DNNP, majority owned and managed by OPG, involves the construction of four grid-scale commercial SMRs — a first among G7 nations — that, when completed, are expected to deliver up to 1,200 MW of reliable, affordable, and low-carbon electricity, enough to power 1.2 million homes.

The WTFNs’ investment is supported by loan guarantees provided by the Canada Indigenous Loan Guarantee Corporation and the Indigenous Opportunities Financing Program, administered by the Building Ontario Fund, on a 50/50 basis. The WTFNs’ investment represents the largest Indigenous loan guarantee ever issued in Canada.

The Williams Treaties First Nations are comprised of seven Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Anishinaabeg Nations who are signatories to the Williams Treaties and whose traditional territories span much of south-central Ontario, including the lands and waters surrounding Lake Ontario, Lake Simcoe, Georgian Bay, and the Kawartha Lakes region. The Nations include Alderville First Nation, Beausoleil First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation, Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, Hiawatha First Nation, Chippewas of Rama First Nation, and Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
