Torys wins “Law Firm of the Year” for energy law
We are pleased to announce that Best Lawyers Canada has named Torys the 2020 “Law Firm of the Year” for our expertise in energy law. We're also very proud to report that the co-head of our Energy Practice, Krista F. Hill, has been named Lawyer of the Year for Energy Law in Toronto.
Best Lawyers Canada applied their peer-review-based methodology to examine our scope of expertise in the rapidly transforming landscape in the fuel and power sectors, supporting clients in energy project development, asset-based transactions and regulatory guidance and more. Below are just a few examples of recent work we have done for clients in the sector:
- We are advising Wataynikaneyap Power, a partnership between several First Nations Communities and FortisOntario Inc., on all commercial and regulatory matters in connection with the development and financing of a transmission line in Northwestern Ontario which will connect 17 remote communities to the provincial transmission grid.
- Torys acted as counsel to Greenfield Energy Centre on the C$480 million refinancing of a 1,005 MW gas fired combined cycle power facility, the largest combined-cycle gas-fired project in Canada, located near Sarnia, Ontario.
- Torys has been retained by Alectra to act in connection with Alectra’s rate application and related request for 5 years of incremental capital funding before the Ontario Energy Board recovered through a unique rate structure. The application follows the successful merger of four municipal utilities which came together earlier this year to form Alectra, Ontario’s third-largest electricity distributor.
Torys also acted for Alectra Utilities in its application to the Ontario Energy Board for leave to acquire and amalgamate with Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc., along with related licensing matters.
