Patently Absurd, Episode 9: Right of repair, inducing infringement and standard-essential patents

Speakers

Join Torys' intellectual property lawyers for an informal discussion on all aspects of patent law. We’ll be analyzing the old, the new—and most definitely the absurd—in candid conversation, all while taking questions from the audience and welcoming special guests along the way.

Episode 9: right of repair, inducing infringement and standard-essential patents

Patents that are essential to global technical standards are the subject of complex, long-term licenses between global competitors. When negotiations break down, which courts hear the case, and what do they decide? Must the royalty rate always be fair?

Dr. Jonathan Putnam, a former professor at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law, joins Niki and Andy to discuss some of the procedural, economic and strategic issues that are unique to standard-essential patents, and what makes the balance between the interests of innovators and standard implementers so hard.

This session will be presented in English.
