Sylvie Rodrigue, Ad. E. wins the 2023 OBA Award for Excellence in Class Actions

We are pleased to share that managing partner of the firm’s Montréal office and head of Torys’ national Class Action practice Sylvie Rodrigue, Ad. E. has been named the 2023 recipient of the Ontario Bar Association’s (OBA) Award of Excellence in Class Actions.

This recognition is awarded every year to an “outstanding member of the OBA for their exceptional achievements, distinguished service, and contributions to class action law”. Sylvie will be honored at the OBA Class Actions Section’s annual Colloquium program on Friday, December 1 in Toronto.

Sylvie’s extensive experience defending class actions across Canada has garnered industry-wide recognition over the years. She is continually ranked in legal directories, including by Chambers & Partners, Lexpert, Best Lawyers, and Benchmark Litigation. She’s been named twice in WXN’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women list—in 2016 and 2019. In 2014, Sylvie was awarded the prestigious designation of Advocatus Emeritus by the Québec Bar, presented to members of the Bar in recognition of their outstanding legal career, remarkable contributions to the profession, community service and maintenance of the highest standards of ethics and character.

Beyond her practice, Sylvie has been a devoted contributor to the development of class action law and the broader legal community. She founded the Class Action Section of the OBA in 2008 and organized its first Class Action Colloquium the same year. In addition, she was the co-chair of the International Bar Association Multi-jurisdictional Class Action/Collective Redress Working Group, co-chair of the International Class Actions Subcommittee of the Class Actions and Derivative Suits Committee of the American Bar Association and was a member of the Ontario Bench-Bar Liaison Committee. She served as a member of the Law Commission of Ontario’s Advisory Group that addressed the amendments to the Class Proceeding Act from 2013–2016. She continues to chair the Canadian Bar Association National Task Force on Class Actions since 2011 and is a member of the Québec Bar Class Action Committee.

Sylvie’s impact on class action law in Canada is undeniable. This award is a true testament to her outstanding achievements and service to the bar. Congratulations, Sylvie!
