Southwest Calgary Ring Road

The project won the 2016 Gold Award for Innovation and Excellence in Project Financing from the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships (CCPPP) and IJGlobal’s award for 2016 North American Road Deal of the Year.

The southwest segment of Calgary Ring Road extends from Lott Creek Boulevard on Glenmore Trail/Highway 8 south to Macleod Trail (Highway 22X). In addition to the construction of new highway, the project involved the reconstruction of Glenmore Trail from Sarcee Trail to east of 37 Street.

Features of the project include

• about 31 km of six and eight-lane divided highway
• 14 interchanges
• 1 road flyover
• 1 railway crossing (flyover)
• 49 bridges
• 1 rail underpass
• 3 river crossings

On September 13, 2016, Mountain View Partners (MVP)—a consortium consisting of Meridiam Infrastructure North America Corp., Kiewit Canada Development Corp., Connor, Clark & Lunn GVest Traditional Infrastructure Limited Partnership and Ledcor Investments Inc.—signed a 35-year contract worth C$1.42 billion with Alberta Transportation, on behalf of the province of Alberta. Under the agreement, the province will fund 60% of the capital construction cost, which will be paid during the five-year construction phase, and MVP will finance the remaining 40% over the 35-year construction and operating period.

The design and construction of the project was subcontracted to KGL Constructors, a construction partnership made up of Kiewit, Graham and Ledcor. The operations and maintenance was subcontracted to Alberta Highway Services Ltd.

The southwest segment is one of the last sections of the Calgary Ring Road, which when finished will circle the city providing 101 km of free-flow travel.

Preliminary construction on the southwest section began in Fall 2016. 

Phase 1—between Glenmore Trail and Fish Creek Boulevard—opened to traffic on October 1, 2020. A 10 km section running through the former Tsuut’ina Nation lands is now called Tsuut’ina Trail.

Phase 2—between Fish Creek Blvd and Macleod Trail (Highway 22X)—opened to traffic in October 2, 2021.
