Cape Scott Wind Farm
Torys acted as counsel to ENGIE Canada (previously International Power Canada Inc., then GDF SUEZ Canada Inc.) in its acquisition and development of the 99 MW Knob Hill (now Cape Scott) Wind Farm located in the Cape Scott plateau region of northern Vancouver Island, with Sea Breeze Energy Inc.
Located on 864 acres within the traditional territories of the Kwakiutl, Quatsino, and Tlatlasikwala First Nations, the wind farm consists of 55 Vestas V100 1.8 MW Class IIIa-II turbines.
The Cape Scott Wind Farm, which reached commercial operation in November 2013, was the first wind energy project approved by the Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia.
Torys acted as counsel with a team led by Valerie Helbronner (consultation), Krista Hill (acquisition) and Dennis Mahony (environmental).
Torys also acted on the following in connection with this project:
- International Power Canada (now GDF SUEZ Canada Inc.) in negotiating the impact benefit agreements with the Quatsino, Tlatasikwala and Kwakiut First Nations in connection with its acquisition of the 99 MW Knob Hill (now Cape Scott) Wind Farm
