Petro-Canada and Suncor Energy complete merger
Torys acted as U.S. and special Canadian counsel to Petro-Canada in its strategic merger with Suncor Energy in connection with the Petro-Canada Public Participation Act, and on structuring and employment matters. The Torys team included Peter Jewett, Patrice Walch-Watson, Andy Beck, Jay Romagnoli, Christina Medland, Peter Keenan, Wilfred Estey, Jay Holsten, Jim C. Tory, John Cameron, Philip Symmonds, Aaron Emes, Craig Pell, David Mattingly, Tara Sastri and Stacey Parker-Yull.
On August 1, 2009, Petro-Canada and Suncor Energy Inc. announced the completion of its joint merger. The combined entity will operate corporately and trade on the TSX and NYSE under the Suncor Energy (SU) name.
Suncor Energy is now Canada's largest energy company and the fifth largest North American-based energy company by market value.
This deal won the Canadian Dealmakers' 2009 Energy Industry Award.
