Ronak’s practice focuses on privacy, cybersecurity, and data management. He advices national and international clients, including technology companies and other data-centric clients on matters relating to data use and ownership, complex business transactions involving data-based assets, outsourcing, and artificial intelligence.
He routinely advises clients on privacy and data protection issues, including cross-border transfers, global privacy compliance considerations, data ethics and data governance. As a breach counsel he regularly liaises with IT and forensic professionals in managing breach investigations and implementing remediation plans. Ronak’s background in intellectual property, commercial contracting and litigation allows him to assess relevant industry standards for data protection, business objectives and legal risks when assisting clients in designing cyber security strategies and resolving information security incidents.
Before joining Torys, Ronak articled and worked as an associate at a prominent national firm. He then continued his practice at a leading intellectual property boutique as well as a civil litigation boutique.
Ronak also has experience in global health having worked at a leading think-tank, where he advised the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as well as several African countries on ways to improve health using local innovations.
Ronak is on the Board of Directors for Buddies in Bad Times, a Toronto-based queer theatre company.
Ronak has served on the Ontario Bar Association’s Health and Administrative Law Executives, co-chaired the “Give a Night” fundraiser for HIV/AIDS initiatives, and volunteered for Law Help Ontario’s Civil Litigation Project.
