Owen Payne's practice focuses on corporate law with an emphasis on private equity, private fund formation and mergers and acquisitions. Owen has been involved in numerous private equity and private M&A transactions, including investments and exits by private equity funds, pension funds and strategic parties in a wide range of industries. In addition, Owen has extensive experience with private equity fund formation transactions, acting regularly for both private equity fund sponsors as well as pension plans and other institutional investors in their investments into private equity funds.

Owen has acted for a number of institutional investors in connection with their investments in private equity funds, including: Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board, Public Sector Pension Investment Board, Ontario Municipal Employees' Retirement System, OPSEU Pension Trust, as well as other pension fund clients. Owen has also worked with Northleaf Capital Partners and Imperial Capital to establish and raise capital for their private investment funds.

Professional Involvement

Prior to joining Torys, Owen worked as an intern at the U.S. Department of Commerce where he provided support to American businesses with governmental and trade promotion activities in Canada. During law school, Owen completed an exchange semester at the University of Hong Kong where he studied international business law.


While at Torys, Owen volunteered for the Law in Action Within Schools (LAWS) program, a high school program that uses legal education as a tool to assist students to succeed in school and become engaged and active citizens. During law school, Owen was a peer tutor with the Queen’s Law Academic Assistance Program.
