Sumeet's practice is focused on intellectual property, advertising and marketing, and regulatory law, particularly with respect to the biopharmaceutical, food and beverage, medical device, and natural health product sectors. He regularly advises clients on intellectual property and technology matters related to corporate transactions.

Sumeet also specializes in trademark law, including trademark portfolio management and strategy, providing clearance opinions, filing and prosecuting applications, enforcement actions and opposition proceedings. In addition, he focuses on drafting and negotiating intellectual property and other technology-related agreements, including licensing, research and development, distribution and confidentiality agreements.

Sumeet is a registered Canadian trademark agent.

Professional Involvement

Prior to working at Torys, Sumeet worked as a technology transfer officer for a large Canadian research university and its affiliated health centres. During this time, Sumeet managed the IP and commercialization of invention disclosures, which ranged from medical and surgical devices to novel drug targets.

Sumeet has also worked with a large aerospace engineering and manufacturing company in the United Kingdom, contributing to the development of its IP management and commercialization strategies.

In 2008, Sumeet was on secondment in South Africa with the South African Department of Science and Technology, where he assisted in the drafting and implementation of legislation that sets out the rights related to IP generated from publicly funded research institutions.
