Navigating stablecoin regulations

A part of the “What you need to know about stablecoins” series.

Speakers

Cryptocurrency is often surrounded by a discussion on its volatility—with major crypto assets experiencing great highs marked by even greater lows. However, as the markets continue to explore digital money, financial players have begun to embrace stablecoins.

In this series, we address what stablecoins are, the arguments for and against them, and why they are growing in popularity. We also delve into how Canada regulates these crypto assets, and what the future legal and business landscape may look like.

Navigating stablecoin regulations

The two principal categories of regulation for crypto assets (including stablecoins) are virtual currency legislation, which requires money service business registration and compliance, and securities laws compliance. However, does the current regulatory framework fit the emerging use cases for crypto assets, and stablecoins in particular?

In the last session of this series, we provide an overview of the regulatory environment for stablecoins, and whether a securities law framework is the optimal approach.

This session will be presented in English.
