Confederation Bridge
Torys acted as counsel to a syndicate of underwriters in the C$680 million real return bond financing in connection with the Confederation Bridge PPP project to design, build, operate and transfer the construction of a 13 km bridge across the Northumberland Strait, connecting Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

One of the first applications of public-private partnerships in Canada, Confederation Bridge is the longest bridge in Canada, stretching nearly 13 km across the Northumberland Strait. The bridge connects Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, which were previously only linked by a government-subsidized ferry service.
Engineers incorporated a number of safety features into the bridge's design. Features of the design include
- curves to ensure drivers remain attentive, and to reduce the potential for accidents that are believed to happen more often on straight highways or bridges
- a road surface made of a special long-lasting bituminous mixture that minimizes vehicle spray during wet weather
- 1.1 m high concrete barrier walls that minimize visual distraction and serve as a windbreak
- more than 7,000 drain ports that allow for the runoff of rainwater and melting snow and ice
