
Widely recognized as a leader in his field, Tony is the Chair of Torys’ Corporate Restructuring and Advisory Practice and has for many years been called on by discerning clients to provide legal and strategic guidance on complex Canadian and cross-border financial restructurings, recapitalizations, sale processes and distressed M&A.
Tony is perennially named by all major domestic and international legal publications as a leading corporate and commercial lawyer specializing in financial restructurings. He typically works on critical projects with senior corporate executives and boards of directors, private credit and equity firms, pension fund managers, strategic acquirers, bondholder groups, bank and alternative lenders, and court officers.
Known for his focus on client results, Tony’s practice blends broad legal skills with business orientation, negotiating and tactical acumen, and effective management of multi-disciplinary or cross-border teams. Prior to assuming the role of Chair, Tony was the Head of Torys’ Corporate Restructuring and Advisory Practice, and he has continuously held one of these senior positions over the last 25 years.
Tony’s extraordinary deal experience includes pivotal roles in many of Canada’s prominent domestic and international restructurings. Particular areas of experience include negotiated debt workouts, recapitalizations, debt exchanges, re-financings, distressed investments and acquisitions, governance, disclosure, family business disputes, court proceedings under the federal Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (“CCAA”), complementary Chapter 11 proceedings, plans of arrangement under the Canada Business Corporations Act (“CBCA”), sales auctions, interim financing, and debtor-in-possession loans.

He has lectured to a variety of leading industry groups, including the Insolvency Institute of Canada and the Canadian Institute’s conference on Advanced Insolvency & Restructuring Law, on topics ranging from cross-border insolvencies and restructurings to the financing of restructurings and alternative restructuring arrangements.
Tony has also been a guest lecturer on restructurings for the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School.
