Andrew Bernstein on the appointment of the next SCC justice

In an interview with Canadian Lawyer, partner Andrew Bernstein shared his support of the Prime Minister’s nomination of The Honourable Mary Moreau as the next Supreme Court of Canada justice.

“The thing that strikes me more than anything is that she is such an experienced jurist,” Andrew said.

“Some of the more recent appointments have been wonderful people who don't necessarily have a long career in the judiciary.”

Andrew also highlighted Justice Moreau’s extensive understanding of what it’s like to be a trial judge.

“You don't need nine judges with that perspective, but you certainly need some judges with that perspective… It's really important to understand—especially in criminal law—what happens in a trial,” he added.

Reaffirming his support, Andrew thinks this appointment will have unanimous approval from the legal community.
