As the cost of living in Canada continues to rise, the federal government has announced proposed amendments to its Competition Act—particularly addressing concerns around recent hikes in food prices.
When asked to comment on the topic, partner and co-chair of the firm’s Competition and Foreign Investment Review practice Omar Wakil told Reuters that the proposed amendments will increase the cost of doing business in Canada and provide no benefit to consumers.

“What is clear is that the cost of market studies will be borne by businesses that will have to pass them onto consumers,” Omar said in response to one proposal which would allow the regulator to conduct market studies on anti-competitive practices.
“And those costs could be significant.”
