As founders grow their business, it’s important that they seek out legal advice early.
Partner and head of Torys' Emerging Companies and Venture Capital group Konata Lake told MaRS Magazine that most firms that work with startups offer accessibly priced, fixed-fee packages that cover incorporation, provide templates for important documents and insights into stock option plans.
“This advice doesn’t have to be costly and if you go with a reputable firm that has experience with venture-backed companies, you can hit the ground running,” he added.
Trusted advise from a lawyer can help to protect founders from liability related to the business and to place their startup on a path to being investible, in addition to mitigating costly mistakes.
“It can be expensive to clean up something that’s not done in the right way,” Konata said.
