In this bulletin, our lawyers discuss the NAFTA negotiations and its implications for Canada.
Our Government Practice has a nuanced understanding of the needs and objectives of public institutions, allowing us to help our clients cultivate effective partnerships between private- and public-sector players.
Torys' Government practitioners know the broad range of public policy issues that can arise through the regular course of business transactions. We advise foreign and domestic clients on acquisitions in industries where public issues and government entities play important roles, including power, oil and gas, culture, broadcasting, telecommunications, aerospace, financial services, health and transportation. This often includes advice on political, legislative and regulatory processes and ongoing developments.
We are regularly involved at the federal and provincial and territorial levels in advising governments or government business organizations, such as Crown corporations, with complex transactions involving their assets, such as privatizations and other divestitures and acquisitions. We make direct representations to obtain political and government approvals and assistance on sensitive policy matters, as well as on matters involving Investment Canada, the Competition Bureau or other government agencies. We also make representations on behalf of our clients before courts and tribunals. We act both for and opposite governmental authorities in infrastructure, board advisory and governance and legislative initiatives.
Members of our group have extensive experience in Canadian federal and provincial governments that cross many areas of public and private law, including The Honourable Frank Iacobucci, former Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, others who have worked in government and with current and former parliamentarians, as well as those who have been seconded to work with federal and provincial regulatory bodies.
