Summer is finally here, and what better way to kick it off than with some hot topics from the courts? The BWA team is here to help you stay on top of all the latest developments, with special guest Professor Carissima Mathen from the University of Ottawa.

The panel will discuss:

  • is federalism an existential threat to Canada? The Alberta Court of Appeal’s ruling in the Reference on the Impact Assessment Act;
  • the extreme intoxication provisions of the Criminal Code: the SCC’s decision in R v Brown; and
  • when does an unconstitutional law become unconstitutional: the new rules of stare decisis in R v Sullivan.

Plus a special 15-minute Q&A with Professor Mathen about how to balance equality rights, the presumption of innocence and the right to a fair trial.
