Booming Canadian capital markets are the busiest they have been since 2006

May 05, 2021

Legal Week has reported a surge in activity across the board in the Canadian capital markets. Citing Bloomberg—which stated that Q1 2021 saw 32 Canadian companies announcing IPOs raising a combined C$3.26 billion, which is over 10 times the amount raised in Q1 2020—the article confirms that this is the busiest that Canadian capital markets have been in the past 16 years, with Q1  figures comparable to Q1 2006, where C$3.58 billion was raised in public offerings.

Speaking to Legal Week on the heightened activity in the first quarter of 2021, co-head of Torys’ Capital Markets Practice Rima Ramchandani said that issuers are taking advantage of  opportunities to enter the market with follow-on offerings and substantial capital raisings.

“We have issuers that are going back to market repeatedly in a very short period of time,” Rima said.
