The Diversity Committee is recognizing Pride Week 2014. 2014 marks the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City, the event largely regarded as the catalyst for the LGBT movement for civil rights.
Pride events will take place across North America this summer. Some of the events near Torys offices are listed below:
- WorldPride Toronto is being held this year from June 20-29. The Pride Parade will take place on Sunday, June 29, with the Trans*Pride March occurring on Friday, June 27 and the Dyke March on Saturday, June 28. Back in 2009, Pride Toronto, in partnership with Tourism Toronto submitted a bid to host WorldPride 2014. Toronto was chosen to host the first WorldPride to be held in North America. Going forward, WorldPride will be held every 5 years in a host city selected by InterPride. Pride Week in Toronto generally draws an estimated 1 million people and $130 million dollars to the local economy, and WorldPride 2014 is expected to be five times larger. It will be an international celebration incorporating activism, human rights, and diversity.
- Pride New York will be held June 24-29, with the 44th annual Pride March to be held Sunday, June 29.
- Pride Calgary will be held August 22-September 1. The Pride Parade will take place Sunday, August 31.
- In Montréal, Fierté Montréal Pride will take place August 11-17. The Pride Parade will be held Sunday, August 17.
While significant progress has been made in the past year to further LGBT rights, challenges to equal rights for LGBT persons continue across the world. We at Torys are proud to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for members of the LGBT community.
