Chambers Global 2011 names three of Torys' practitioners among Canada's top tax lawyers

Torys has "a strong tax group in support of the major transactions the firm works on," reports Chambers Global 2011

Highlights include acting for IESI-BFC on its merger with Waste Services, a deal that created North America's third-largest solid waste management company. Other notable clients are Thomson Reuters, Sears Canada and Bank of Montreal.

  • Corrado Cardarelli is recognised for his income trusts work and is "particularly deft in cross-border matters." He represented Quad/Graphics in its proposed acquisition of World Color Press, a transaction that established North America's second-largest printer by sales. 
  • James Welkoff has "an excellent grasp of Canadian tax issues." His clients include Manulife Financial, Brookfield Properties and Fairfax Financial Holdings. 
  • John Unger has "substantial experience with tax concerning capital markets matters, including REITs, securitisation, and debt and equity offerings, and is rated for his technical dexterity and client rapport."
