Chambers Global 2009 names three of Torys' practitioners among Canada's top tax lawyers

March 11, 2009

Corrado Cardarelli, James Welkoff and John Unger are among Canada's top-ranked tax lawyers in Chambers & Partners' Chambers Global: World’s Leading Lawyers for Business, The Client’s Guide 2009.

This team remains "extremely strong," and has "some great individuals in its ranks," who earn significant praise from interviewees: "The lawyers here are reliable, conscientious and accessible." Torys has principally made a name for itself in M&A, income trusts and REITs, and the team recently represented Thomson in its US$18.2 billion acquisition of Reuters.

  • Corrado Cardarelli is a solid member of the team, highly rated for his accessibility and clarity: "He takes complicated tax questions and answers them quickly and simply – he's a really user-friendly lawyer and one of the reasons we go to Torys."
  • James Welkoff is described by sources as "bright and highly skilled." His practice is largely based around corporate finance, M&A and international transactions.
  • John Unger is appreciated for his straightforward approach: "He communicates at a level you can understand, without a lot of jargon." Focusing predominantly on capital markets and M&A work, he "really knows his stuff and he never forgets a thing."
