March 11, 2009

Adam Delean, Jonathan Weisz, Amanda Balasubramanian, Blair Keefe, Michael Feldman, Jim Hong and Rose Bailey are recognized as among Canada's top banking and finance lawyers in Chambers & Partners' Chambers Global: World’s Leading Lawyers for Business, The Client’s Guide 2009.

"Concentrating on lending, structured products, project finance and regulatory matters, Torys represents Canadian corporations, financial institutions and pension funds. Supported by its full-service New York office, it also has a particular niche in cross-border financings," reports Chambers. Clients and peers had high praise for our ranked lawyers in this area:

  • Adam Delean is well-versed in such work, having represented Thomson in financings worth US$21.3 billion (provided by Bear Stearns, Barclays, Royal Bank of Canada, TD Bank and JPMorgan) for its acquisition of Reuters.
  • Jonathan Weisz handles projects work, and recently advised Scotia Capital and Dexia Credit Local on a C$750 million financing for the partial refurbishment of Bruce Power’s Bruce A nuclear facility. “He is really creative and has great business sense,” clients reported.
  • Amanda Balasubramanian, a rising star on the team, is experienced on the lending side and advised Alinda Capital Partners on its C$1.7 billion financing for the acquisition of the assets of UE Waterheater Income Fund. She is admired for her ability to develop a “great rapport with clients.”
  • Blair Keefe's in-depth knowledge of his area of expertise, Canadian regulation, also brings esteem to Torys. He primarily advises large insurance companies, and Canadian and foreign banks, such as TD and ICICI. “Blair is the person to go to when you need a quick and definitive answer for financial institution regulatory issues,” says clients. He recently advised State Street on its acquisition of Investors Financial Services and the subsequent reorganisation of its Canadian operations.
  • Michael Feldman has broad expertise, particularly in securitisation and structured products, and led the team advising National Bank of Canada on the ABCP matter.
  • Jim Hong is a securitisation expert with a growing reputation. His highlights include acting for CCARAT II, a public securitisation vehicle for GMAC, on a C$752.4 public offering and C$316.3 million asset-backed loan agreement.
  • Rose Bailey, is another partner active in securitisation and is well-known for her “assiduous client relationship management.”
