Torys recognizes three of its own for mentoring next generation’s lawyers

Three Torys lawyers were honoured this week for going above and beyond in their mentoring of colleagues.

The recognition came at the firm’s 11th annual Mentor Awards, a Toronto-office tradition reflecting its firm-wide culture of mentoring and collaboration. May is Mentor Month at Torys, with each office hosting events to celebrate the mentor-mentee relationship.

“Mentoring can be truly transformative,” said managing partner Matt Cockburn. “It is much more than just a firm responsibility—it is critical to keep our people engaged, resilient and happy, whether in the office or working remotely during the past couple of years.”

Winners this year were Cameron Koziskie, Alexandra Shelley and Vidushi Hora. Representing different practices at the firm, they were selected after a process that nominated 15 associates and 12 lawyers or counsel.

Cameron, one of the country’s leading funds lawyers, continues to balance his busy schedule as a partner with the important work of supporting junior colleagues.

“This year,” said one, “we started up ‘Campuccinos’, where on a rotating basis, funds associates get the opportunity to grab a coffee and chat with Cameron about file or concept-related questions and general career advice.”

Alexandra, a senior associate whose work focuses on litigation and dispute resolution, was honoured for the support she provides colleagues on a daily basis.

“Despite being extremely busy with file work and other mentorship obligations,” said one colleague who nominated Alexandra, “she always makes time to answer questions, check in with me, teach me and help me navigate challenging problems.”

The mentoring that Vidushi provided this year inspired colleagues to think of her as a role model. Amid her work as an associate specializing in banking and debt finance, she found time to share insight gleaned from her own experiences as a lawyer with the firm.

“We consistently feel supported by her,” said one junior colleague, “and find that she is an amazing source of advice and a listening ear. We find ourselves thinking ‘what would Vidushi do’ when facing difficult or tricky situations.”

Mentoring is a key component of Torys’ lawyer and student development programs. Every day across the firm, lawyers assist their colleagues in myriad ways—big and small, formal and informal. These relationships inspire and motivate, foster mutual respect and trust, and provide ongoing support and guidance.
