Are there industry monopolies threatening competition in Canada?
In Canada’s proposed changes to its Competition Act it included an enhancement to its antitrust regulations. If passed, the Competition Bureau Canada will be able to provide remedies to counteract anti-competitive international mergers. This change is meant to address increasing industry consolidations that have threatened to influence the Canadian marketplace.
In an interview with Reuters—which was syndicated to The Globe and Mail, Financial Postand other publications—co-chair of Torys’ Competition and Foreign Investment Review practice and chair/president of the Canadian Bar Association Omar Wakil said that "whether and why there are monopolies in markets are factually, legally and economically complex questions."
"So I don't think one can simply state that there are monopolies and that is because of a problem with the competition laws," he added.
