A recent incident at an elementary school in Ontario’s Halton region prompted a discussion around cameras in the classroom.
Molly Reynolds spoke to CBC in an interview about the event, stating that the constant surveillance of staff and students could pose legal risks.
“Privacy considerations of everyone in the room have to be considered and the board would have to get consent from everyone,” Molly said.
"The school boards are regulated by public sector privacy legislation, which has very strict requirements around the basis on which school boards and then in turn schools can collect personal information.”
Molly suggested more individuals dropping into or being present in a classroom to encourage more human oversight rather than constant surveillance.
