Two first-year law students receive Torys full scholarship with aspirations to give back to their Indigenous communities

We are pleased to congratulate Kyle Kahgee and Devlin Williams for being named the inaugural recipients of the Torys LLP Scholarship in partnership with Ryerson.

As reported by Law Times and Ryerson Today, Kyle and Devlin, first-year students of the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, hope to give back to their respective Indigenous communities through this opportunity.

Kyle, a member of the Saugeen First Nation community, told Ryerson Today that he hopes to inspire Indigenous youth that education is a way forward for their people to advocate for their rights and to help foster reconciliation.

Devlin looks to uncover new pathways for young Indigenous and Afro-Indigenous people to pursue a career in the legal field and to remove the mystification behind it. He told Ryerson Today that through this journey he wants to show the people in his community that law school is not unattainable.

The Torys LLP Scholarship is a renewable initiative in partnership with Ryerson and is part of the Indspire’s Building Brighter Futures program that awards full-time Indigenous students entering their first year at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law’s JD Program with a three-year scholarship.

Over the next two years, four more first-year law students will receive the scholarship.

“Law school can open doors to a vast range of opportunities,” said Torys Managing Partner Matthew Cockburn.

“The firm created this scholarship because we believe society is best served when these opportunities are available to everyone. The future of the legal profession relies on bright and talented individuals having the opportunity to pursue legal careers, making their own contributions to—and unique marks on—the profession and their communities.”
