Partner Robert Froehlich spoke with DOB Energy about LNG development in Canada and Torys’ Investing in Canada primer series.
Drawing on over 15 years of experience working on LNG transactions, Robert discussed how interest in the Canadian market has evolved and diversified.
“I think the scale [of interest] is bigger now because there’s been some success,” he said.
“And at one time… 20 or 25 projects were proposed or in process 15 years ago or so. There was an opportunity to be where we are now sooner.”
Against a backdrop of government backing for the sector and measures aimed at improving the approvals process, Robert also pointed to the significance of the opportunity for investors.
“The timing is now and people are interested in the market and the opportunities that are here,” he added.

Robert noted that this interest extends beyond Canada’s West Coast, with investors considering LNG opportunities in other regions of the country.
“Whether it’s the specific opportunities identified, new opportunities, [or] just different regions in Canada having different opportunities for LNG, it’s not just a West Coast story.”
Reflecting this growing and diversifying interest, Torys’ LNG primer provides investors with an accessible overview of the Canadian market, including current opportunities, investment structures, financing considerations and key risks.
