South Canoe Wind Farm
The largest wind farm in Nova Scotia to date, the project utilizes 34 Acciona Energy AW-116/3000 3 MW turbines and consists of two separate facilities:
- a 24 MW facility (IR-372), owned by Minas Basin Pulp and Power, utilizing 8 turbines; and
- a 78 MW facility (IR-379), owned by Oxford Frozen Foods, utilizing the remaining 26 turbines.
Combined the facilities generate enough electricity to support the needs of 32,000 homes.
Nova Scotia Power holds a 49% minority ownership interest in both facilities, which were developed on private land owned by a subsidiary of Minas Basin, near the settlements of New Russell and Vaughan, located 25 km southwest of Windsor.
Construction began in 2013 and the farm achieved commercial operation in June 2015. The renewable power generated by the farm is sold Nova Scotia Power under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Further information on the project can be found on South Canoe’s website.
