Fort Saskatchewan Sequestration Hub
Torys is acting as counsel to Wolf Midstream in connection with the proposed development of a carbon sequestration hub east of Edmonton, Alberta, following its successful bid with partners Whitecap Resources Inc., the First Nation Capital Investment Partnership and Heart Lake First Nation under the Government of Alberta’s RFPP process.
The proposed saline aquifer sequestration hub will be designed to serve large facilities in Alberta's Industrial Heartland seeking an independent, safe, and timely CO2 sequestration solution.
Initial hub volumes are expected to be between two to three million tonnes per annum (MTPA) with significant expansion capability to support current and future requirements of Fort Saskatchewan area businesses.
On March 31, 2022, Wolf Midstream (“Wolf”), Whitecap Resources (“Whitecap”), the First Nation Capital Investment Partnership (“FNCIP”) and Heart Lake First Nation announced that they were selected by the Government of Alberta to enter into an agreement to pursue the development of a potential carbon sequestration hub in the Fort Saskatchewan area, following a highly competitive RFPP process.
Development work will begin with a technical evaluation of the geographic area to be conducted by Wolf and partners confirming the area’s suitability prior to applying for a long-term lease to be issued by the Government of Alberta. The partners are targeting an in-service date prior to the end of 2024.
