The summer is a great opportunity to get to know Torys – who we are and what we do. We do not have a rotation program during the summer so you will be free to explore the areas of practice that interest you the most.
Work assignments are distributed to students through a centralized workload allocation system. All of our summer students meet weekly as a group with the workload coordinators who are associates in our Corporate Department and our Litigation Department. During these meetings, you have the opportunity to talk about what you are working on and what other types of work you might want to explore. The workload coordinators will direct work to the students on the basis of their stated interests. You are also encouraged to begin to manage your own workload by seeking out new assignments directly.
We also have an online workload allocation system whereby you can go online at any time and update your status and what you are working on. With this system, when a workload coordinator (or a practice representative in a smaller practice group) is asked to find a student to assist with an assignment, he or she can go online to find a student with the capacity and interest in that particular type of work. In addition, you should also feel free to approach any lawyer in any practice and at any time to ask if there are opportunities to work with them.
Throughout your summer, we encourage you to talk to Shirin Mirsaeidi, Acting head of Student Programs, the workload coordinators and your mentors should any issues or concerns arise around workload coordination.
Some of our students spend half the summer at the firm and the other half doing legal work for a public interest organization – either locally or internationally – or legal research for a professor at a Canadian law school. If you are interested in such an arrangement, you are welcome to approach us with a specific proposal after being hired. Torys will pay the full summer salary to students who participate in a preapproved arrangement or program.
Summer students receive a salary competitive with that of students at other large Toronto firms, in addition to a summer fitness club membership.
