The Hon. Frank Iacobucci was inducted as an Honorary Witness by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada at the Commission’s final national event held in Edmonton last week. Honorary Witnesses are generally Canadians of non-Aboriginal backgrounds who have been recognized for their support and involvement with Aboriginal issues; along with Frank, included in the group recognized last week was His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Canada’s Governor General. Frank was the federal representative in the negotiations leading to the Indian Residential Schools settlement.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established under the Indian Residential Schools settlement to hold hearings and have former residents of the school and others impacted by the Indian Residential Schools legacy share their stories and feelings about the schools and the consequences that resulted from the system that was put in place for Aboriginal children.
