Training and Professional Development
Torys puts a premium on the training and guidance of junior members of the firm. Our partners and associates are reviewed on their ability to help students and more junior associates develop their skills. The lawyers senior to you are expected to provide clear and helpful instructions; to be available to discuss issues and answer questions; to treat team members with respect; to maintain a professional manner even in difficult situations; to recognize mistakes as a learning opportunity; and to provide both constructive feedback and recognition for a job well done.
Torys is committed to the ongoing professional development of our students, associates and partners. Your first week at Torys will be devoted to an extensive orientation program designed to familiarize you with our resources and support services, and the practical skills you will need to be a successful student and lawyer. This orientation includes tips on the transition from law school to practice; training in research, writing skills and time management; and the basics of closings and other aspects of corporate/commercial transactions. The program also includes customized computer training; library and intranet training; an introduction to our Standard Form Documents and precedent systems; and instruction in practice-management techniques.
The professional development of our lawyers and students is guided and enhanced by our extensive continuing legal education program, known as "UniversiTory," an 18-month rolling curriculum that includes sessions on corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, derivatives, bank financings, securitizations, managed assets and other topics pertinent to your practice at Torys. A parallel litigation program is offered, which includes trial skills and advocacy training, and sessions on drafting facta and pleadings, negotiating for settlement, motion practice and techniques for discovery.
UniversiTory is supplemented by educational seminars tailored to our students. You can expect to receive training in basic securities law, corporate acquisitions, shareholder agreements, and in drafting pleadings and preparing for trial. Our student program provides skills training in advocacy, legal research and writing, delegation, practice management, communications, interviewing and negotiation. You will also participate in weekly or bi-weekly practice meetings to discuss current matters of interest.
To help you identify your strengths and improve your skills, you will receive formal reviews of your professional development throughout your time as a Torys student.
