Student Program: Toronto
Tips for Interviewing
We know that small differences in the way firms approach the recruiting process can cause anxiety and concern. To assist you, we have outlined our approach.
Applications
- We do not require reference letters or writing samples.
- We will send you an acknowledgement of your application by email.
On-Campus Interviews: For Summer Student Applicants Only
At-Firm Interviews: For Articling Student and Summer Student Applicants
- We will email all applicants the week before Call Day to let you know whether we will be contacting you on Call Day to schedule an at-firm interview.
- We invite our interviewing students to attend a small group dinner with us (typically three students and three lawyers) on Monday or Tuesday night, as well as a breakfast reception at the firm during interview week. We will advise you of these events before Call Day.
- Most of our first interviews are held on Monday of interview week to allow time for follow-up meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, if it is impossible to schedule a first interview on Monday, be assured that a first interview on Tuesday is as good as a Monday interview.
- You will normally meet with four of our lawyers and one student during your first visit to Torys. There will be one to three lawyers in a meeting with you at any one time.
- We adhere strictly to the recruiting guidelines set by the Law Society of Upper Canada. Before Wednesday at 5:00 p.m., we will not give you any indication whether you will receive an offer on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m., and we will not ask you to tell us if you would accept an offer. Our low-key approach should not be taken as a lack of interest. It is important to us that we adhere to the letter and spirit of the Law Society's guidelines.
- We do not expect to receive thank-you cards or notes from candidates. If you would like to pass along brief thanks, a call or an email to one (not all) of the lawyers you met is more than sufficient.
- At 5:00 p.m. on the Wednesday of interview week, we make an offer to every student we want to hire. We do not extend a second round of offers once we receive responses.
