Summer Associate Program: New York

Training and Professional Development

Torys puts a premium on the training and guidance of junior attorneys in the firm. Our partners are reviewed on their ability to help you develop your skills. Partners are expected to provide clear and helpful instructions; to be available to discuss issues and answer questions; to treat team members with respect; to maintain a professional manner even in difficult situations; and to provide both constructive feedback and recognition for a job well done. We have quarterly meetings with our associates to discuss current issues and concerns.

When you arrive at Torys, your first couple of days will be devoted to an orientation program designed to familiarize you with our resources and support services, and the practical skills you will need to be a successful summer associate and attorney. This program includes technology, library and intranet training, and instruction in practice management techniques (see Our Resources).

Following orientation, the firm runs an internal training program that involves external faculty and attorneys at the firm. In the past, the summer program has included seminars on legal writing and drafting; computer-assisted legal research strategies; research analysis and memo writing; the attorney-client privilege; due diligence and closings; U.S. securities laws; and mergers and acquisitions.

To help you to identify your strengths and improve your skills, you will receive frequent one-on-one feedback on your work, often from the partner in charge of the project. Each summer associate will also receive a formal review at the mid-point and end of the summer.
