Jonathan is repeatedly recognized as one of Canada's leading banking and finance lawyers.

Practice

Jonathan Weisz is the head of Torys' Project Finance Practice Group. His practice focuses on project finance, project development and secured lending. Jonathan has advised on many transactions, in particular in the energy, infrastructure and mining industries.

Jonathan has recently represented several of North America's most prominent energy companies and project finance lenders in a variety of transactions in Canada and abroad. He acted as lead counsel to the lenders on the C$100 million financing for the Macquarie Power & Infrastructure Fund's 20 MW solar ground mount project in Ontario, the C$80 million financing of the enXco 20 MW solar ground mount project in Ontario, the financing of Ontario Power Generation Inc.'s C$2.6 billion Lower Mattagami hydro-electric expansion project, the $750 million financing for Borealis Generation Infrastructure Trust to fund part of its cost of refurbishing the Bruce A nuclear facility (Project Finance Deal of the Year), the C$75 million financing of AIM PowerGen’s 40 MW standard offer wind power projects in Ontario, the C$942 million project financing of the 840 MW Sithe-Goreway project, and on the C$170 million Deh Cho Bridge project in the Northwest Territories. He was lead counsel to the the borrower on the C$650 million project financing of the 1,005 MW Greenfield Energy Centre project and lead counsel to the monoline insurer on the financing of the Golden Ears Bridge (Project Finance Deal of the Year). Jonathan also advised on Calgary Ring Road and the wrapped financing for six hydroelectric facilities under construction in British Columbia by Cloudworks Energy; and represented Mitsubishi Corporation (Tokyo) in its investment in the US$2.3 billion Antamina mining project in Peru and in the US$1.32 billion financing for this project (Project Finance Deal of the Year). At the time of the transaction, the Antamina financing was the largest-ever in the world for a greenfield mining project.

In addition to his legal practice with Torys, Jonathan worked in Latin America, having spent one year on secondment at a law firm in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He also served as the Director of Project Development for Westcoast Energy International in Latin America from September 1996 until September 1998.
