John is the immediate past chair of the Personal Property Security Legislation Committee of the Business Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association. This committee monitors developments in the personal property security area. The committee has made several submissions for reform of the Ontario Personal Property Security Act, most of which have been enacted.
John is also a former executive member of the OBA’s Business Law Section, which oversees OBA work on securities, corporate, personal property security and consumer law.
John chaired an OBA committee that delivered in 1997 a comprehensive report on personal property security opinions; the report was an Ontario Bar Association bestseller and is the standard reference in this area, helping lawyers to resolve opinions more efficiently.
John speaks regularly about personal property security law and opinions at continuing education seminars for the OBA, the Law Society of Upper Canada and other organizations. He has also been involved in personal property security law reform projects for the Uniform Law Conference of Canada, including a report that recommended changes to accommodate the Uniform Securities Transfer Act.
John has also been involved in law reform initiatives addressing income trusts. In 2003, he chaired an ad hoc committee of the OBA that supported the enactment in Ontario of the Trust Beneficiaries’ Liability Act, 2004, limiting the liability of investors in publicly traded income trusts. John was also a member of the working group that in August 2006 submitted its report “The Uniform Income Trusts Act: Closing the Gap Between Traditional Trust Law and Current Governance Expectations” to the Uniform Law Conference of Canada.
John is a member of the Editorial Board of the Banking & Finance Law Review.
