To address Ontario's growing electricity supply needs and to procure clean, renewable energy capacity, the Ontario Ministry of Energy issued in June 2004 a request for proposals for 300 MW of renewable energy. On November 24, 2004, the ministry announced that ten projects totaling 395 MW were awarded contracts.
Superior Wind Energy, a subsidiary of Brascan Power, was awarded two of the ten contracts for its Prince Wind Farm in Prince Township near Sault Ste. Marie (99 MW) and its Blue Highlands Wind Farm in Blue Mountains (49.5 MW).
