Media and Defamation

Torys' litigators have a long history of defamation expertise, representing both plaintiffs and defendants.

We are regularly consulted to review material for libel before the material's publication. Over the years, we have vetted articles for various daily and weekly newspapers, national and local magazines, trade publications and radio, and we have given pre-publication advice on books and manuscripts. We also regularly give post-publication advice to publishers and represent media defendants in litigation. In addition, we have represented individuals and companies with complaints of defamation in many different situations. Torys' defamation practice includes cases concerning defamation on the Internet and in other electronic media.

Our practice includes matters involving advertising; publishing rights; freedom-of-information and privacy issues; freedom of speech; and a range of issues arising in the context of speech and electronic media, including electronic publishing.

Our litigators have been advisers to the Ontario Attorney-General's department on defamation law reform and are active in presenting at conferences on defamation. We are also the Canadian contributor to one of the leading international defamation texts.
