A transformational change is occurring in what has been, to date, the largely unregulated global over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives market. Sweeping new regulatory proposals in Europe and new regulation in the United States under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act are being matched in Canada by a critical review of this area by securities regulators and legislative action by certain Canadian provinces.
